Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

spooooky October

So!  Life carries on.  And here we are.  I feel like September was just a huge party month!  With birthdays and Benson's baptism and family here for almost half the month...we had a blast!!  It was a great month.  And now we're back to the reality of October.  Not a bad thing...just time to get back into the swing of "normal" life.  So here's a bit of what we've been up to.

Benson began his scouting career 2 weeks ago.  Grandpa Terry was still here and got to go with him to visit the fire station.  He thought scouts was pretty awesome and looks pretty sharp in his shirt and hat if I might say so myself.  So crazy to see him growing up so much!

We've been doing some canning.  Apple sauce.  YUM!  One out of two boxes down.

With the spookiness of October upon us, we had a halloween decorating evening.  Everyone's creations were so unique and spooooooooky in their own special way!  {benson's double scary ghost--the ghost behind the ghost pops up and down via a popsicle stick}

We came home from Costco today and Benson and Claire were so excited to see some leaves that had fallen to the ground.  It's FALL!  Before even going in the house, they both grabbed their rakes and got right to work {which really equated to play in their eyes}.  Then the wheels in their heads got turning.  "see those leaves at our neighbors' house...maybe we can rake their leaves...earn some money from it...and buy that mini car that kids can actually drive that we saw at Costco and have it for our very own.  That way we won't even have to ask Santa for it.  We can buy it ourselves!  Come on!  Let's go make some flyers and pass them out."  And that's exactly what happened!  We didn't intervene a bit.  I was especially impressed with Benson's courage.  He wasn't scared at all to knock on a strangers door, hand them the flyer {see below} and offer his services.  And Claire is the best partner in town.  She loves her brother's ideas, is willing to follow two steps behind, and follow his every dictate with happienss!  They passed out 5 flyers and already have one appointment set up for next Saturday!!  They made a calendar for themselves that is now on the fridge so they'll know when to schedule the next customer.  I love it.  I love their entrepreneurial spirit.  They get it from their daddy.  I love their teamwork.  I love that they decided to work hard for something they really want.  And if it doesn't work out to the extent they're hoping, it will have been a good learning experience, will provide some hard work for next Saturday morning, and they can still use Santa as their backup plan :)  Look what Costco did to us today! (other than dropping our bank account a digit or more!)

And Mabel is potty trained!

I didn't think it appropriate or necessary to take pictures of her success or failures...but she's there!  And she's been a champ about it.  By far the easiest of them all to wean from the diaper.

Benson scored a touchdown today at his football game!  Happy kid.  Happy parents.  Happy coaches!

Happy spooooooky October!
