Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

round 2: biopsy

Claire had her followup kidney biopsy today.  Everything went really well.  She knew what to expect in our "new" hospital environment and she did great going to sleep with the mask.  It's so much easier to kiss her goodbye when we didn't have to have 4 people hold her down and force the mask over her face.  I think she's starting to realize that too and cooperated great today!  Now if she would just let us take the IV out of her hand when it's time to go home without going crazy!!  I don't know what it is about that that she absolutely hates, but she does not like taking the IV out! She doesn't like having it in either, but she really puts up a fuss when it's time to take it out.  Go figure.  But that's all right.  She's still a trooper for all she puts up with from the nice folks in the colored scrubs!!  As always, it was long day at the hospital, getting there at 8:30 for blood work before hand, and then she has to hang around for 3 hours post-biospy to watch for sign of bleeding.  She enjoyed watching Annie during her time on the bed and I read my book Divergent.  We were free to go at 3:00 and were on our way!

This biopsy will help us know how things have shaped up over the past several weeks…if the IV steroids she took a month ago helped treat the rejection.  She feels great otherwise and is still smiling with her cute bottom-toothless-smile!!

Grandpa and Aunt {Hoffer} are out for a visit this week.  They came out to pick us up when Claire was done.  Always great to have extra helping hands,  especially on days like today.  They bring lots of smiles to everyone's faces too…especially on days like today :)

Cute Mabel was determined to pull Claire in the wagon all the way to the car.  Even up the hill.  She tells me every day she's growing bigger.  I think she's right.

I hope the results are all good and that she is on track for a happy kidney. Have you been liking Divergent? I read the first one and then haven't read the second two because I heard the ending and was mad about it. :) The movie looks good! If we lived closer we could go together. Ha!
