So if we're back in Minnesota that must mean there's gotta be a few medical updates. Claire will have a liver biopsy this Wednesday. It's the "4-month" routine post-transplant biopsy that will hopefully be a GO come Wednesday! Depending on the radiologist, she may be able to have the kidney and the liver biopsied at the same time, but it is also likely that the routine kidney biopsy will be scheduled for sometime later this month. She'll have a few other appointments associated with the biopsy...so we'll spend a bit more time at the hospital this week.
Her kidney function numbers actually were up a little last Monday--most likely because of the recent case of diarrhea she had. So we're hoping those have come back down tomorrow when we check them again. Overall, the princess looks and feels fabulous!! Next thing on my list of things to do is to get Claire potty trained....after the biopsies/hospital stays are over. I'd certainly like to have her out of diapers by the time the next little one comes in November. And speaking of which, things are progressing well with the pregnancy. I had an appointment this past week and everything looks great! I love feeling the little one move around inside...it's fun to start to get to know (him/her) by feeling their little bones make their way across my belly! Benson and Claire have loved feeling the baby too. They put their hand on my tummy and say, "kick baby kick!" And usually it does! Their eyes light up big thinking the baby heard and obeyed their command! Claire now says she has a baby in her tummy too. They'll be the cutest big brother and sister this little one could ask for. Next month I will have another ultrasound to check the growth of the baby. I'm a little person and have a little basketball tummy...so the dr. just wants to make sure the baby's growth is on track. I'm feeling fabulous and can't believe how quickly this year is going by! Fall is just around the corner and that means this little one will be popping out of the oven come Thanksgiving time! Crazy!
Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.
