Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

Back again

Well, I guess it's time to get back into the swing of things. We have been on a wonderful vacation for the past 2 weeks and now it's back to reality! First we were in Boston for a week with my family. This was certainly a highlight for us all. My parents rented a house for everyone to stay in...and here's the view we had from the living room:

...downtown Boston at night from our house

The atomosphere was so relaxing and beautiful! But we didn't stay put for long. We went to many of the historical sights in Boston including the Plymouth Plantation, the Mayflower, Bunker Hill, the U.S.S. Constitution, part of the Freedom Trail, Saugus Iron Works, the Salem Witch Memorial & Museum, the Museum of Science and the Boston Aquarium. But if you ask the kids what they liked best, it would probably be this:

And I'm sure Benson would include this on his favorite list too:

He loved seeing all the cannons on the war ships and even got a few cannon souvenirs to take home. First thing he did when he got home was set up his army set with the new cannons ready for FIRE!! It was a fabulous trip!!

And it didn't end there. We flew from Boston to SLC and enjoyed a wonderful week visiting family and friends. We were able to connect with a lot of friends that we hadn't seen for a long time...including many at my 10-year high school reunion and 4 of my most favorite college roommates ever! We made many great memories with our family too.

Good times had by all.

Oh except for the slight bought of diarrhea Claire got for 5-6 days in Utah. That wasn't fun. Talk about washing crib sheets...we did more laundry out there than I usually do in a month!! This little one was pooping ALL the TIME. She caught some kind of bug--still undetermined what after stool studies and blood work. Luckily she felt/acted fine and didn't have any other symptoms with the mysterious bug. But the best news of it all was it ended the day we were flying back home. Diarrhea and airplanes don't go well together so I was grateful she was flowing better by flight time!

Happy to have a place to call home, though. Good to be back.
