Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

another week

Some favorites of the week:

Chatting with friends at girls-night-out. till 11.

The guy in the elevator at the hospital who looked at me, with my three kiddos, and simply said: "You're a hero."

Jared rescuing the baby bunny who had fallen into Benson's window seal, who also quickly became a hero in the eyes of his kids. "But now who's going to eat the carrots and lettuce we threw down there for the bunny's lunch, Mom?"

Claire and I quickly putting a cup over the spider in the bathroom for future killing by above named hero.

Watching Mabel scoot around the entire house. (sniff sniff...she is growing up)

Seeing Mabel's two bottom front teeth when she smiles big...and washing the kid's hands a million times so they can put their finger in her mouth to feel the new arrivals!

Stopping at the grand piano in the middle of the Mayo building and listening to the guy sing "Oh What a Beautiful Morning" and "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat." Don't know if Claire liked it more or me. Almost more than watching him sing though, I loved looking at the gathering crowd of mostly older patients and watch them sing / mouth the words with a sparkle in their eye!

Eating Hot Tamales. (I've interrupted this post about 4 times already just to pop another one in.)

Watching Benson and Claire play doctor again today. They don't do it quite as often and they used to, but every now and then they get that 'doctor bug' and enjoy themselves for a good while. Today they used their mobile sister as the patient, but she didn't last long...she can't stay still too long! (sniff sniff sniff)

Making fresh raspberry jam and eating it on homemade bread that didn't turn out 100% perfect; but the jam made up for the difference.

Reading my book instead of cleaning the house. What a rebel, I know. Atlas Shrugged. I'm a fan.

Watching our tomato plants grow. They're taller than Benson! I don't know what Jared put in that soil, but they like it! Can't wait to see the color red back dropped against the green!

Being home.
