Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

more holiday fun

Well the holidays may be over, but I am definitely still recovering!!  We made it home on Saturday after a 19 hr. straight-drive-through during which we took lots of deep breaths, the kids watched enough movies to last them a month, and my throwing skills improved as I tossed this or that to the back seat.  Jared and I glanced at each other more than once with the "are we crazy" look as we drove, entertained, fed, referred, and offered bribes to any child who would sleep!  And then there came the unloading (and dumping all over the house) the contents of our packed-to-the-brim van including presents and vacation treasures galore.  Our house still looks like a tornado came through it.  All my efforts to have it clean before we left 3 weeks ago were in vain...except I didn't have that mess to clean up on top of it all :)  Then our kind postal carrier brings the pile of mail.  Opening it all is one thing; taking care of the bills, filing the papers, and taking the time to enjoy the cute Christmas cards and letters is another.  Still working on that one.  And there's nothing like jumping right back into things when you get home:  Claire, Mable and I spent most the morning yesterday at the hospital (with a short library break in between apts) doing blood work, a urine collection, and meeting with her dietitian for an annual review.    Long morning short...things look great for Claire.  Yeah!

Okay okay.  Enough about the woes of returning from a great vacation.  It will all come back together again in due time.

It was a fabulous winter vacation! This was the first time, since Benson was a wee-one, that we've been able to be with family for the Christmas season and we thoroughly enjoyed it!  After spending time in Idaho, we drove a few hours to Utah and spent a week and a half there with my family.  The kids, of course, loved being with their cousins again and especially love spending time with grandmas and grandpas...and aunts and uncles are pretty fun too!  We made Christmas treats, played games, watched movies, opened more presents, went to a family Christmas party and even rode a real-live-train up the beautiful snowy mountains!  Claire put on a number of talent shows to any and all who would listen.  She dazzled her audiences with songs about mommy kissing santa clause, our sweet land of liberty, and gave Mabel all the confidence she needed to belt out twinkle twinkle!! We enjoyed the beautiful lights at Temple Square in Salt Lake City even though it had to be a fast walk through since we were all freeeeezing!!  It was such a fun trip and the roads were amazingly next-to-perfect considering the wintery season we're in.  It was a blessing to have the health, time, and means to enjoy such a wonderful holiday season.
