Benson got a cough, runny nose, and fever on Sunday. After reading some books together and listening to him breath, I decided we should take him in to the Mayo Express Care. After waiting for an hour and a half to be seen...{didn't need a lesson in Church about patience...just have to go to an medical facility!} they were quite concerned with the way he was struggling to breath. He didn't sound good at all. They gave him a nebulizer treatment for 5 minutes and that helped a ton! He immediately noticed a difference and he was grateful for some relief. However it didn't last long. Within a few hours and as he was trying to sleep that night, he was right back to where we started. That evening we gave him his inhaler but it didn't seem to make much of difference. After listening to him wheezing and struggling to breath while trying to sleep, we called the on-call doctor and determined he needed to be seen again. As we chatted with Benson before we decided what to do, he told us he wanted to go to the hospital too. So Benson and I went to the emergency dept at 11 pm and actually had one of the more favorable experiences that we've had there. The lady checking us in said, "it's a good night to be a kid in the ED. The adult section is packed, but we're wide open and ready for you on the kids side!" Awesome. Benson got to eat a popsicle while watching Wreck It Ralph...while the doctors listened to him breath, did another nebulizer treatment, & checked his oxygen. He did have to interrupt his program for a chest x-ray but was right back at it after that was done. Conclusion...Benson most likely has some form of asthma/reactive airways...which doesn't surprise me at all. More than once have I wondered if he had some degree of asthma; he's just never had it officially diagnosed. But it seems like Benson really did just have a cold/virus...and that triggered the asthma/reactive airways/wheezing. They put him on a steroid for a few days to help keep things under control and he's been doing great every since! After he gets better he will be seen by a doctor to discuss this and get an action plan put together if/when this occurs again.
Doing the nebulizer treatment while concentrating intently on Wreck it Ralph.
SO, that's that! We got a good night's rest the next night and all is well otherwise.
Today we went to the library and the kids pretended to be astronauts:
& Claire graduated from preschool!! She did it!
