Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

Day 30 Post TX

Happy one-month post transplant Claire! I can hardly believe it's already been a month! Things have gone so smoothly this past month that it almost doesn't even feel like this major event even happened! Jared and I keep comparing Claire's transplant with the accidental open heart surgery she had in October. The transplant, recovery, feelings and emotions were NOTHING compared with what we experienced during the heart surgery. The heart surgery made the transplant feel/look like a piece of cake! There was never the big emotion of fear, worry, or wonder with Claire's transplant. It just felt right. Our emotions were very calm and we were filled with peace throughout. It truly was an affirmation to us that we were in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing for Claire. That is a good feeling.

I truly believe Claire received the organs that were right for her body. Claire and her donor certainly must have had at least a few things in common because her body is loving the new kidney and liver. We will always carry a piece of Dec. 17 with us as we love and live with our Dec. 18th Princess!!

AND as many of you have noticed, we reached our $100,000 goal!! Well we didn't do much at all to reach the goal. It was all of the generous individuals and families and companies out there who made it happen!! We are humbled and filled with a sense of peace and security because of the financial burden we feel lifted. We know there is money safely reserved for Claire and Benson's transplant expenses when needed and that too is a good feeling. I can't believe how quickly that LARGE amount of money was raised! We started with the Children's Organ Transplant Association in May 2009. That is A LOT of money to raise in less than a year! Thank you is such an understatement and feels so inadequate for all that's been done for us but it's what we have to offer. Thank you.

We recognize our Father in Heaven's hand in the many blessings we've been granted this past month. Praying for many more months of post-transplant success!

I have been following your blog and think Claire looks great! I myself had a transplant at Mayo in Rochester when I was 8 years old. I am now 32 and doing great :) There are definitely some great people down there! I hope to keep reading good news about your family.

Many blessings,

I'm with Jenny, your family is a miracle and you have been a blessing to mine. If I could, I would help you raise 5x that amount. You are such an inspiration and an AMAZING mother!

Best wishes,
