Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

Claire had her first meal today. Nothing other than her daddy's favorite Schwans Chocolate Ice Cream! This is incredible. The first time in Claire's life that we've seen something this! Amazing what a new kidney can do for a body.

Her labs and visit with the doctor were great today. How nice it was to be able do labs and come right back home! Claire was so incredibly happy to be home today!! WE ALL ARE!

Claire and Benson also received some special blankets today. Grandma Waite's hometeacher and their family made them darling blankets with hand prints of LOVE! They will be treasured. Aunt "Hoffer" also made both kids the funnest blankets for Christmas. They love to be wrapped up all warm and cozy! Thanks for the gifts of love and warmth. And to my secret New Year's Elves, thank you is so insufficient for the love you've shared. How spoiled I am!

You guys just might have a problem on your hands...if Claire thinks that all her meals should taste like chocolate ice cream you are in trouble!!! Oh well. If anyone can survive on just chocolate ice cream I bet it would be Claire!
