Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

the golden rule

Do unto Annie as you have done unto you.

It's Annie's turn to get a shot...with a screw driver, none the less! Totally Claire's idea. I gave her the empty heparin bottle to go along with all of her doctor stuff and this is what she came up with. The medical world Claire lives in is oh so different than most 3 year olds!! Good thing Annie was born before Mabel!

Claire's liver numbers came down by about 1/2 today!! Hip Hip Hooray!! All the other tests/cultures they took last week came back normal too. So with that good news, we'll keep doing blood work every week and expect them to keep coming back down to where they should be. Yeah for not having to go through another biopsy!

That Claire certainly is certainly part of the medical world. Not many children or even adults have that the exposure that she has had in the medical environment.

But what a trooper she is. I believe she gets medal for being a very good patient also.

First of all I can't believe Mabel is already three months! What a doll. Second, I'm so glad Claire's numbers are going down. YAY! and Third, I hope you had a very Happy Birthday!
