Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

twins

We had some serious twin action going on here on Sunday.
Even babies Annie and Anna got in on the action.  Now that's cute!!

And just for remembrance sake...Claire and I had the opportunity to go talk with a group of first year Mayo Medical students last week.  A friend of ours is a teacher's assistant for the class and he invited us to come in and tell a little about Claire's medical history.  The students had a little fun and did some thinking while we were there too.  I gave them information leading up to the problems we had with Claire's bile duct, and then they had to diagnose what was going on.  After I talked about Claire's medical history, I stopped while they formulated possibly diagnosis and came up with follow-up questions to ask me.  Then we had a brief question and answer period and with a little nudging from the professor, the students did finally figure out the correct diagnosis.  Claire came along and was making all the students laugh and smile.  At first she quietly stayed by my side and listened to me talk.  By the end she entertained them by dancing, stretching, and smiling while I was unloading the history of her life!  It was a fun thing to do and I think the students enjoyed it a lot too!

Oh Claire.  The minds you've made think.  The lives you have changed.   For the better.

You are right the lives that Claire has touched is great and the hearts she has touched is even greater.

Love the pics of the girls and their babies.
