Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

their princess too...

Two people who mean a lot to us:  Dr. El-Youssef (liver dr.) and Dr. Milliner (kidney dr.).  Dr. El-Youssef thinks Claire is nothing less than a princess and every time she's there, he begs her to have mercy on the boys when she gets older!  I can't say enough good about either one of them.  On one hand, I am so grateful for all the time, energy, effort, money, and sacrifice they've put into their profession.  They know what they're doing and how to do it right.  On the other hand, they care for their patients on a deeper level than what the lab results turn out to be.  They care and love my children on a personal level and show that concern each time we're with them.  No matter the reason for our visit with these doctors, we always come out with a smile on our face and assurance for what the future holds for our health.  I feel blessed to have become associated with them over the past 4 years at Mayo.  We will greatly miss them but will be fortunate to visit on an annual basis as we watch our princess grow!
