I waited all morning for Claire to go pee! We needed to collect a urine sample for today's labs so we put a 'bag' on her at 9:30 am---surly she'd go to the bathroom before we went to the hospital at 11 for her other labs, right? That way I could drop the urine off while we were already at the hospital. How easy this would be!!
Claire had other plans. It's called.....let's not go to the bathroom with this awkward bag attached to my bum. Her labs this morning took a bit longer than they should have. We waited for the lab people to come for some time and then her catheter wasn't working. After trying every trick they knew, they finally called the dialysis nurses to come up and see if they could use some magic to get it to work. And they did! It finally worked...and we all breathed a sigh of relief. So we were at the hospital for an hour and a half which was good because it gave her more time to relieve herself, right? Nope. No matter how much I encouraged and bribed her, she wanted nothing to do with it!!
And so we came home with no urine sample left at the hospital.
Then I got a bright idea. How about I set her on the potty and tell her to go?!? And so I did.
And so she did.
Now I'm on my way back to the hospital to drop off the sample.
Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

What a cute potty! Gotta love it when you figure out a solution... about five minutes too late! That's great that she decided to be a "big girl" all on her own! That's what Marcie did-- one day she decided she wanted to use the potty & after that day she was potty trained. ALL BY HERSELF. It was AMAZING!!! Oh what I wouldn't give to have Kaitlyn be that way, too. (I'm crossing my fingers!!!)
It looks like you had fun at the Spam museum! Who knew there was such a thing?!? Claire is SOO smart! I love your posts about her discoveries. She always amazes me!!!
LOVE & MISS YOU GUYS!!! ;)
PS... Glad you're feeling better!
Such a simple solution. Sometimes those are the hardest to think of!!!
I am not sure if I would be too keen on having a bag between my legs either. :) I remember trying to get Lib to pee in a cup when she was little so the doc could see if she had a bladder infection. It was a joke. I pumped her full of juice and followed her around the house for hours with my little sterile cup. NUTS!
I was thinking that Claire would really enjoy a trip out to see me sometime. When do you get travel clearance? It is a year after the transplant? I can't remember...
