Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

it's good to be home

Claire has had this tube hanging out of her for 2 1/2 weeks now and we finally got to take it out today!! It's similar to an IV, stuck into her with a needle, but it's poked into the port implanted in her. She's happy to have it out. Sure will make baths and play time more fun!

We're so glad to be done with her IV antibiotics. How nice it was tonight for everyone to stay home and to get Claire to bed on time! She's exhausted. Amazing that she doesn't fall apart with a lack of sleep. It will be nice to get back into our normal morning and night time routines. You don't realize how much you need that routine till you can't have it!

Her kidney function still hasn't improved at all. We're hoping after her diarrhea clears up that the kidney function will get back down. If it doesn't, a possible biopsy might be in the future. Sigh.

The red dots in the middle of her chest are scabs from her itching so much. Now we just have to stop her from itching the scabs that are trying to heal over. Pretty amazing how you can barely see the scars from the transplant, eh?!

Two different uses for the baby walker. A chew toy....

....and a doctor station.

That Claire is one little amazing walking miracle child.

You just got to love her for what she goes through on a day to day basis.

Glad that she is done with the IV shots or what ever they were. Just glad you are all home and safe.

Love ya all.

Oh Nat, my heart aches for your little Claire and for you as her mother! It is the worst thing to watch your children suffer! She must be a special little spirit to have the strength to endure all the pain and sickness. Thank goodness she has a Mommy like you! Glad to hear she's done with antibiotics. Now lets get her kidney funtioning better! Lots of love!

Oh, and I wanted to say...I can't believe how big your baby has gotten! It seems like a week ago you just had her, and now she's already in a walker! She's too cute!

I'm glad you guys are home and I hope you get to stay home. It's just amazing how tough Claire is. You're a light and inspiration to all, Natalie. (And that baby sure is sweet! She really does look like a dolly baby!)
