Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

port removed

Everything went fantastic today!! It was an early morning for us 3 girls because Claire was first on the list. We had to be there by 6:45, the surgery started at 8:16, but we were home by noon! That's ONE way to start your day!! Thankfully not the way to start it EVERY day!

But everything went smooth. Mabel was a champion-tag-along-little-sister and makes Claire happy. I think she likes Mabel coming along on these hospital trips because it makes her not feel so alone. With Benson usually playing with friends during these kind of days, at least Mabel's there to hang around with her.

They had always put medicine in Claire's port to put her asleep for surgery, but since they were taking OUT the port, they used the mask to put her to sleep....and she HATED it. I don't blame her. It's not a pleasant thing to have that forced up to her face, covering her nose and mouth. She just doesn't like it! But it didn't take long for her to go to sleep and the procedure was quick and painless from there.

She's a tough cookie and didn't end up needing any further pain medication throughout the day. She took it easy for the first few hours after we got home (thanks to Barney) and I had hopes she'd fall asleep on the couch, but not a chance. She was up and feeling herself again by the afternoon. But that's the way we like out little Claire--feeling her happy self. Good to have a good hospital day!

Here it's in...

And the souvenir they took out.

She's mad in this picture because she wants the IV out of her hand! "out" she kept saying!!

How grateful I am for the many blessings dear little Claire continues to receive! What a trooper she is, and maybe she was unhappy in the pictures, but her beautiful countenance always shines throuh. What an ANGEL she is, and is loved more than words can tell.
Love to ALL, Grandma Great
