Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

paint time

We found a great recipe for homemade paint. Half the fun for the kids was making the paint themselves...4 times for 4 different colors! They painted away and to top off the fun, you microwave the paper after you're done for 30 seconds till it puffs and dries! It was an activity that actually entertained them for quite a while!

1 Tab flour, 1 Tab salt, 1 tsp baking powder, 2 Tbs + 1 or 2 tsp of water, and a few drops of food coloring, per color. I'm not sure what I was thinking letting Claire paint in the white dress she wanted to wear, because inevitably, it did get paint on it...but clean up was a sinch! It easily whipped right off her dress and the walls, thanks to Mabel's little hands. Definitely a repeat activity!

Benson and Claire have missed having Grandpa and Grandma's dog Molly around to play with and take on walks. SO they found a leash for Mabel and hooked her up! Mabel's such a good sport. She just wants to have fun...and the kids love taking advantage of that!
