Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

First day of school

Benson had to do an "All About Me" page for the first day of school. He included his favorite things to do, such as playing soccer, ping pong, and chess. His favorite color is blue and his favorite number is 5. He included his love for going on vacation with his family and riding 4-wheelers/motor bikes. At the end I asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up.

"I want to be a builder."

I believe him.

A few phrases from Claire throughout the day..."This is the best day ever!!" "It's a girl party!" "Mom, if I take care of Mabel for you all day, will you help me clean up?!" sure, that's a fair trade off! "I get to choose whatever movie I want to watch while you and Mabel take a nap!!" And yes, I did enjoy a nice nap while she watched the girl-iest movie she could find! I'm sure it won't be too many more days before she gets a little board and wishes her side-kick brother was around to liven things up.

Benson had a great first day. A few of his comments about the day were...it was long, his favorite thing was music time, lunch was fun, recess was short, it was hot, he liked his teacher, and he remembered a few friend's names that he sat by. I'm sure the long-ness of it will take a bit to adjust to, but I think he's going to have a great first year!

Sure was quiet around the house today.
