Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

the 5 year old girl

Well the birthday morning started off on the right foot with Claire's favorite breakfast that we slaved over making--a full sliced up banana. I like simplicity and obviously so does she!

Then it was off to Bounce world. What child doesn't love bouncing around on inflatable air! Claire had a blast bouncing with her good friend Madilyn. Benson and Mabel didn't miss a beat either.

After working up a hearty appetite for a PPJ lunch, we rushed out the door to Benson's first soccer game. Unfortunately I was too busy trying to keep Mabel off the field, succeeding most of the time, so I didn't get any pictures of him. Good thing I'll have 5 more chances to do it...maybe next time she'll have learned her lesson. ha ha. After soccer, Mabel came home for a nap and the kids went back to bounce world to....bounce their world again!

Then that was it. She had waited long enough. Finally it was cake and present time! She's really into Doc McStuffins right now. It's a little girl on the Disney channel who takes care of 'sick' animals. Little wonder Claire likes such a thing as that! But since Doc is pretty new and not super popular, we had to get creative in how to pull off the cupcakes she wanted. She had a big smile after seeing her cupcakes so that's what counts!

She got the little red wagon that she wanted to pull Annie and all her belongings around in and with that alone, she was completely satisfied. All the other wonderful goodies she got were icing on the cake...including a flash light from Benson, a Franklin movie from Mabel, a Doc McStuffins movie, some darling cloths, movie tickets, a portable cd player, a bigger bike helmet, empty baby food jars to feed Annie with, a package of tootsie rolls, and bubble tape gum! LOTs of icing to add to her "best day ever!"

And you can only imagine her delight (and Benson's jealousy!) when a bouquet of balloons arrived at our door.

We finished the day off with Pizza Hut, the Lorax, and a sleep-over for Benson and Claire in the Princess tent.

Wow. What a day. What a girl. What an amazing year! What an amazing life this little girl has lead. She is such a joy in our family. We love her singing. We lover her helpfulness. We love her silly faces, her bags full of baby supplies, and her stories about Annie. She loves her meat and cheese sandwich at lunch, her stroller (and now wagon) filled with goods, and to take care of little ones, pretend or real! What a girl.

I am so glad she's 5.

Hard to believe that Claire is five. Glad she had a great day. She deserves it. And she deserves having a lot more great days ahead.
