Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

Monday labs

Claire had blood work and a visit with the doctor today. She pretty much looks as fabulous on the charts as she does in real life! Everything is great. That liver still isn't quite within the normal range, but no worries from the doctors....so no worries from me. Kidney function is fantastic! And her oxalate levels are even going down. Slowly--but down none the less. She's figured out how to walk with her broken (hopefully practically-healed) leg. She's cruising all over the place now and we constantly have to remind her that running and jumping is NOT allowed when you have a cast on!! Nothing much stops this little one....which in many ways is a good thing. The rest of the week should be smooth sailing.

Benson is, as of tomorrow, officially starting the new study medication. We finally got all the approvals and test done and I picked up the medicine today. Let's keep our fingers crossed that he'll DRINK it now. I've been warned that it's not the most pleasant tasting 'drink' but hopefully we'll be able to convince him to do it....willingly. He can't eat for 30-60 minutes before he takes the medicine or for 30-60 minutes after he takes it so that may be a bit of a challenge too. Hoping for the best!

Benson is pretty brave. I am sure you can talk him into taking that stuff. I bribe my kids. You could try that! :)

I hope that it works and he can avoid all this transplant business...
