Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

Purple brace

Claire got her brace yesterday and I am pleasantly surprised at how great it is....in every way! It fits her leg/foot perfect, it fits inside a pair of shoes we already have for her, and she walks in it with out any indication of being bothered by it at all. In fact, I was out talking with our neighbor tonight and our kids were playing together for quite some time before she even noticed Claire was wearing it! (and Claire had shorts on so it's not like it was hiding!) It certainly helps her not be so rambunctious and gives her leg just the right amount of support. Best of all, Claire doesn't mind wearing it AT ALL. She always does have to wear a shoe with it so another bonus is it keeps her from climbing on the couches in the house! We don't have her wear it all the time, but the times we do put it on, it does it's job perfectly without any complaints from the princess. Yeah!
