Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

weekend and week

I had a fun, busy weekend in Colorado!! It went by way t0o fast. Friday night to Sunday afternoon was definitely too short, but it was still well worth it to be there and see so many friends!! The main reason I went out was because one of my good friends was competing in the Mrs. Colorado pageant! I have always loved watching pageants and actually knowing someone in one was even better! A group of us went to support her and we had a ball. Couldn't have asked for more fun in a shorter amount of time!

One of the best parts was going to Church on Sunday. It simply felt like I was "home" again seeing so many wonderful friends there whom we still love and care about so much. The love and concern they have expressed to our family since all our medical fun began over two years ago has been unceasing...regardless of which state we lived in. We love our Colorado family!

Claire got her cast off just before Jared drove me to the airport on Friday. Her leg isn't completely healed, but it was good enough to take it off. Our doctor suggested we get Clarie a leg brace to help support her leg as it continues to heal and to prevent any further problems. He pretty much left it up to us as to whether we get it or not but Jared and I have decided we are going to have one made for her. She doesn't have to wear it all the time but it will provide support for her as her bone continues to heal and strengthen. She's been very leery to walk on it right now and kind of shuffles without really picking her legs up too much. I think it will help her a lot right now. And when the leg does begin to be get stronger, the brace will also help to keep her a little more settled down and not so hard on her legs. NOT that playing ring around the rosies is hard on the legs....but she and Benson certainly do get a little crazy together sometimes (if you can imagine that) and we just don't want anything else to happen!! SO we have an appointment to have that made on Thursday. It will be customized to fit her cute little leg perfectly and will be jointed so she can still walk/move with it on. Today we wrapped her leg in an ace bandage and that even seemed to help support her leg a bit more and also kept her walking slow too. We'll keep wrapping it during the day until the brace is ready.

Claire started the Bactrim desensitization today. This is the antibotic she has to take that she may be allergic to. We started today by giving her a very small dose of the medicine and then she was monitored at the hospital for the next 90 minutes to make sure she doesn't have a reaction to it-which she didn't. So we'll do the same thing tomorrow and for the next 11 days, gradually increasing the dose of the medicine until she's at the full dose and desensitized to the medicine by then. Then she'll continue taking it every day at the full strength. So it will be a fun week and a half at the hospital as we shoot the med through her g-tube and hang out for an hour and a half. But compared to the dialysis as we were doing before, this will be a piece of cake! Claire and I enjoyed cuddling on the bed today and reading lots of books for a good hour of the time. Tomorrow Benson will come with us so I'm sure we'll be a bit more active with him around. We love brother's entertainment!

Fun weekend. Busy week. Here we go!
