Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

Tuesday

Another biopsy down.

Claire was almost "scarily" good going to sleep with the mask this morning. Usually she's kickin' and screamin' all the way to the last second of consciousness. And today she started like that; but then the second we laid her on the operating table, she closed her eyes, crossed her arms across her chest, and laid as still as could be. The nurses looked at me like, "uh, what just happened?" I had the same puzzled look on my face. We were trying to figure out what the trick was, what we did different this time....but finally concluded that Claire simply decided it was OK. Wow. That was nice. Much more pleasant for all involved. She was so happy and proud of herself when I talked with her about it afterwards. Hopefully it's a new trick that will kick in each 'sleepy' time.

Everything went well with the biopsy and the stretch of the bile duct. I guess there was a little bleeding from the biopsy, so they did an extra ultrasound after she woke up, but it appears things healed up okay. She and I had a lazy afternoon as we waited for the time to tick by and enjoyed watching Tangled together. She likes it all except for when the witch cuts the baby's hair and takes her away from her family. That whole kidnapping thing freaks me out a bit also to be honest. So we both closed our eyes. She peeked to tell me when it was over so we could enjoy the rest of the show!

6 hours later they did blood work to make sure there wasn't anymore bleeding from the biopsy and then gave her the thumbs up to leave around 6:00. Mabel and Jared joined us for the last hour...nice to have a little change of scenery even if it is just a few new faces!

Results: the bile duct stretch was again very "encouraging" and he felt like it was the best he's seen it since this all began. The question still remains as to how long we'll keep doing the monthly stretches. No one knows why her liver labs jumped so high again...although her white cell count is up too..so hopefully that doesn't mean she's getting sick. We will meet with the kidney doctor tomorrow for results on the biopsy, urine collection, and echo. The liver doctor wants to meet with us on Thursday...so maybe more info then about those crazy numbers.

Before biopsy, bright and early, enjoying the morning sun.

Giving dad the report on the phone and requesting a cheese stick from home. She ate 3 bowls of chicken noodle soup at the hospital!! Nothing like a little comfort food~!
...And Just For Fun...
The next picture is of Benson when he was 2. They must be related!!

Painting has become one of Claire's favorite things to do at 3G. They need her to "lay low" for most of the afternoon after a biopsy, so this has become a good way to break up the long hours of movies.

Mabel found her own ride home while waiting for Dad to bring the car up!

Glad that Claire was a trooper at the hospital for the tests.

Hope things go well for the rest of the week.

It looks like Claire is getting plenty to eat these days.
