Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

Feelin' good

For the first time since Claire was 2 months old, she doesn't have a dialysis catheter!!

Everything went really well today. Claire was a bit traumatized but I don't think it hurt too bad; it was just the whole unknown process--a new surgeon's face, holding her down, razor and scissors to cut off the stitches and simply not knowing what was happening or how it was going to feel. But it was quick and over with! She was excited to come home and show Jared and Benson that her catheter was all gone. One week from today, Claire can have her first real, lay down in the water, splash all you want to BATH!! Yeah!

Tomorrow we're going to meet with a surgeon to discuss different options of placing another catheter and when to put it in.

We played Halloween today with our final Easter egg hunt. I finally got a picture of Claire in the Halloween costume she never got to wear! She's still a duck lover!

Hooray for no catheter! Glad to hear things went well today.

I wonder if Claire will like taking a bath or if it will take some adjusting to.

By the way, your Easter picture is beautiful! Everyone is looking at the camera and smiling. An Easter miracle! :)

I have a feeling Claire is going to be an expert at bath taking despite having never done one. :) Woohoo!!
