Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

Well, we're surviving the week. Barely. But surviving none the less. It wouldn't be quite so bad if I wasn't (very) pregnant and uncomfortable pretty much every minute of the day (and night). But that's why I lay down a lot when I'm home and decide to take more mommy breaks than I normally would! And I'm not even feeling bad about it either. :)

Anyway, Claire is doing well. She truly has been blessed to feel great in spite of all that may be wrong within. She's as happy, lively, and crazy as ever! We'll finish up her last infusion of high-dose steroids tomorrow and then give her high oral doses of it...until we tapper it back down to a lower dose.

We met with her doctor today and the good news is that the BK virus was NOT detected in the kidney from the biopsy on Friday, but the bad news is that that doesn't mean it won't come back either. Especially with the increase in her immune suppression drugs....it is more likely the BK virus will come back because her own immune system is suppressed in fighting off the virus. SO there's a very fine line we have to walk in too much immune suppression and not enough. Crossing over the line either way can cause major problems....rejection or virus....neither of which we want!!! So hopefully the doctors can find that right line to walk on and get the kidney happy! We will do another follow-up biopsy the first week of November to see where things are at.

Benson's apt. have gone well this week. He's a tough kid when it comes to medical stuff. I guess he's learned a lot from his younger sister. All his tests and blood work got done this week with no sweat! Tomorrow we will meet with the doctor to discuss any findings for him.

Yeah for the weekend ahead....and for an amazing, helpful husband. Don't know how I could survive without his dinner help, cleaning assistance, milk-shake skills, and child-duty-after-work-take over! Not to mention the surprise back, foot, hand and scalp massage he sent me off to this week. Good thing only one of us is pregnant....or we'd be in BIG trouble!!
