Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

random elevator story

We ride in a lot of elevators. Every time we're at the hospital, we're in an elevator at least 4 different times. So the kids have lots of races to push the buttons and love riding. Last Friday, Claire decided to ride in one by herself. OOps.

She and Benson ran ahead of me to race to push the button to get down to our car. We were on the 5th floor. I'm not sure who won the race, but one of the four elevator doors quickly opened just after the kids pushed the button. Claire raced inside the elevator, so she could push the button to get us down. Benson, knowing I wasn't there yet, stayed outside of the elevator...looked at me....looked at Claire....and didn't quite know what to do. I hurried as fast as I could to get to the elevator when I saw what was going on but it was too late. The door closed and the screams began. And boy did she scream!! She was scared. Very scared...as she should be!! I didn't know where she was going to end up...but wondering if she had pushed the M button to get to the main floor, Benson and I hopped on the next elevator and headed down. When 'her elevator' came, she wasn't in there...but someone who was getting out asked if we were looking for a little girl. I said yes, and he told me she was on the 4th floor. So Benson and I hopped back on and headed up. We heard her crying as we approached the 4th floor and found her in a nurse's arms. She was trying to console her...but her only consolation came with a hug from her mommy again. She hung on tight to me for a long while after that....and the whole rest of the day. She needed lots of comfort cuddles and I was happy to give them.

Since Friday, she has made a simple request of me every time we get near an elevator: "Mom, can you buckle me up in my stroller so I won't run away into the elevator by myself?" It was pretty traumatic for her, poor girl. But I don't think she'll make a run for the elevator again by herself.

Poor little thing. We have an elevator here at the condo. The girls like to race to push the buttons too. They got in the elevator once and then doors closed with me outside. I hurried and pushed the down button and the doors opened up again with them inside. Luckily, they didn't push any buttons. They were FREAKED. Natalie always keeps her arm out to "hold the door" until everyone gets in now. Seems to be pretty traumatic for them! I can't imagine if they would have gone down and been lost. They would have been a mess. Ahhhh. Kids.

Wow that had to be a scarey experience.

I am glad it had a happy ending.

Leave it to our children to add to the stress level of your day.

But we just keep on loving them no matter what happens. And we never stop loving them.
