Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

leaves

Scene: Benson and Claire, outside, playing by a tree stump and a bush full of leaves.

Mom: Hey guys, what ya doing?

Benson: Making a swing out of some twigs and leaves.

Mom: Oh cool! How about you, Claire?

Claire: I'm just doing blood work on the leaves.

Mom: Really. Wow!

Benson: Hey look, here comes a bee.

Mom: Maybe you could do blood work on the bee, Claire!

Claire: No mom. You can't do blood work on bees. Only leaves.

Mom: Right. I should have known.

Clalire knows best when it comes to blood work.

When I was a kid they had a tv show called "Father knows Best". Today Claire could probably have a show called "Claire knows Best when It comes to Blood Work.
