We'll see them again next month, same time, same place, same doctor, same nurses, same procedure, with hopefully a little different result. She's getting real comfortable up there on Joseph 6. Now when we go to the hospital she asks if we're going to Joseph 6 (biopsy and bile stretch) or 3G (where the PICU is) or level 5 (where she does blood work.) She's one smart little cookie. No matter where she goes, everyone always LOVES seeing Claire!
Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

4th Stretch
The procedure went well today. Claire was the first case so they got her in and out quick. She even woke up from the anesthesia happy...which is not always the case! However, the disappointing news is that her bile duct contracted right back to where it was a month ago...about 3 mm. It didn't hold it's 8 mm stretch! Hum. The doctor came and chatted with me and said he wished he could give us a time frame for the future but really has no idea how many months this could go on. He said it did stretch nicely again as they dilated it with a ballon, but the most important test is what it comes back as, a month later....nice and round or back to where it was. Yes, it's disappointing, but I'm not completely shocked either. And really, the drain line/bag is not that bad. She's still able to do most of the things little 4 year old's do and it really doesn't bother her most of the time. SO if this is what's best for her, we'll keep pressing forward.

I wish attitude counted a bit more in all this medical mumbo jumbo. You guys would be healthy as horses out there! Way to go on not letting things get you down. It is inspiring. Hopefully, next month will be different news.
Claire has the best attitude.
She makes the best of any situation and we love her. Hopefully things will progress to where her bile duct functions properly. We will continue to pray for her.
