Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

swimming

Benson had his swimming lessons this afternoon and it just so happened that none of us had anything planned....so we all went along with him. I'm not sure if it ended up being more FUN or CRUEL in Claire's behalf! Because of her biliary tube and her pic line, Claire can't get in any kind of water (baths or pools). But we did let her put her feet in and walk around. She was happy for the zero-entry section where she could walk around and dream of the day when she'll be able to join Mabel on the ducky slide!! Soon enough (hopefully)! Little Claire really does have some great self-control for a 4-year old. No fits, no tantrums, no pushing the limits....only a few stern reminders. Benson loved his lessons. Mabel was a little nervous about the pool at first but it didn't take her long to see that this was good fun!! Bet ya can't guess what we'll be doing after Claire gets those tubes out!!

What a great pool.
That is too bad for Claire. But like you say she is one remarkable little girl. And we love her.
