Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

Monday again

So it's January. The holidays are over. Company is gone. And we're finally getting back into our routine. Which is a good thing. Breaks from normal life are good, exciting, and memorable. But it's also nice (after a few days of "jet-lag") to get back into a somewhat-normal routine. And so we're there.

It's going to be a fun winter! Benson is starting a basketball league on Saturdays at the Y. He'll also have his first day of swimming lessons tomorrow morning. Claire is still doing preschool with her friends and will start ballet again next month. Both the kids will start the home school co-op on Friday afternoons in a few weeks as well. My goal is to work out at the Y at least once a week and Jared plays on a basketball league once a week too. So it's not that life ever really slows down. It just gets a different kind of busy. A little more predictable, scheduled, but is still exciting.

Nothings going to be done about the viruses Claire has. As long as they don't go into the blood stream, it's okay. The antibiotic she's taking for her UTI is working great and she feels fabulous! She and Mabel will both do blood work this Thursday...Claire's is for routine-type of stuff and Mabel to make sure her iron level has come up since last month. I did get her to drink the iron drops by putting them in prune juice! She loves it and this way she doesn't get constipated either. I love it when things work out like that.

Now we just need some snow. It's January and we've hardly had anything! Bad year to get Benson a snow board for Christmas! Although he has been out riding his bike a few times this month. Weird.

Random FYI about the Princess Claire. She, like her momma, LOVES going to sleep with an cold rice pack on her head! (I thought of this because she just asked me to go get one for her). She asks for one nearly every night. I could go to sleep with one every night as well, but limit myself to only using it when I have a head ache before bed. I don't want to get too "addicted" to having to go to sleep with one....but there's something about it that just soothes my soul, takes my head ache away, and puts me out in no time! Works pretty good for her too I guess.

I loved making a green cake with purple frosting today with Claire. She decided we needed a celebration dessert tonight so it was topped with 2 candles and a plastic hello kitty. So fun. So childish. Not in a negative way...green, purple, and plastic kitty is exactly the way it should be! There is probably a saying somewhere out there somewhere similar to this....but I'm realizing for myself that the "innocence of childhood is NOT going to last forever!" So I'm making more of a conscious effort to enjoy every moment my kids "as KIDS" have to give!! Why NOT celebrate today.

I need to take some pictures. I don't know if subconsciously I've had a picture-overload after the holidays or what....but I need to get snapping again!

That's great to celebrate youth and young children.
They grow up way to fast. So it is just best to love every single minute anyway you can celebrate with them.
