Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

transformation

This morning was a transformational day.

Our school table turned into an operating table.

Annie turned into a liver transplant patient.

The Wii remotes were turned into IV medicine.

Benson and Claire turned into doctors.

And Mabel into a doctor in training!

First Annie gets her name tag on and hooked up to the machines.

The doctors do their initial assessment.

Annie gets some ear drops because of an infection.

Annie gets her NEW liver!! (sealed up tight with an HP tegaderm and a band aid to top it off.)

Cleaning up the loose ends

Preparing the g-tube for take-home medicine.

It was hilarious! Some serious fun happening here! Annie. What a trooper you are!

Oh my. That is some serious play time. My kids usually just have the dolls dress up for a ball. :) He, he, he. Except yesterday, Libby did take Gage's tonsils out. Natalie didn't want to play that game quite yet...

It looks llike Benson and Claire and even Mabel knew what they were all about. They seemed to be aware of the procedures and the process for a successful outcome.

Can't help but love them all.
