Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

family "reunion"

We came to sunny St. George, Utah for a family reunion this week. Unfortunately, our family reunion will now have a funeral attached to it. My sweet Grandma Hawks passed away on Sunday at 90 years of age! She is simply amazing. 5 children. 25 grandchildren. 101 grandchildren. 7 great grandchildren. She visited over 50 countries!! The memories I have traveling with her are so dear to me. She lived here in St. George and I feel so fortunate we were able to be here and spend a few priceless days with her before her passing. This picture was taken on Friday, 2 days before she died. She'd been sick for a few weeks, but then things went downhill pretty quickly over the weekend. What a blessing it is to be here with family at this time.
