Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

Benson's news

This afternoon Benson had his follow-up appointment with his doctor. Overall, things are good for him. His creatine (kidney function) went up a bit and is just outside of the 'normal' range. Up, is not the right way...but it's not of concern. His oxalate levels are steady. The ultrasound of his kidney did show more 'build up' (which then forms stones) on his kidneys, so we are going to do one more 24-hr urine collection to see if we need to change/increase his medicine. He feels great and hasn't had any issues...so hopefully it stays that way for a long long time!

We finally got out of the hospital at 5:20 after our 3rd potty break, picking up meds, and getting his collection container....and decided to go to Oxbow Zoo to see the Christmas light display and animals. Thankfully it wasn't tooooooo cold outside. It was at least warm enough for all of us to enjoy it for short amount of time. The kids also enjoyed Santa, crafts, cookies and staying up late!

Benson at least enjoyed Santa. Claire was too cozy, comfortable, and still a little uncertain about the jolly man in the big red suit.

Notice the bob cat's eyes in the background!

Sweet Mabel showing off her new tooth that's still trying to push it's way through.

So cute. They all look like they had fun. I love Benson's story about President Monson's wife. Too good. How you are all doing well.
