I thought I would pass this along because I'm sure other companies have the same policy my husband's did.
My husband, Kevin, approached his Employee Activities Committee about doing a bake sale for Benson and Claire. The head of the committee was very interested in helping out, so he presented it at their meeting and they agreed to sponsor it. He also learned about the company’s policy to match the funds raised up to $500.
Kevin talked the bake sale up to a bunch of people at work and they agreed to make things for it. He helped post posters and continued to spread the word. Kevin had me make my butterscotch banana bread and he made white chocolate chip pecan cookies.
The bake sale ended up with tons of food. The bake sale ran on an honor system where people could help themselves and make a donation based on what they thought was fair.
People were VERY generous (one person gave a check for $50 the day before because he couldn't make to the actual bake sale) and the bake sale made $421. Kevin's company, Thomson Reuters, then matched the donations, to make a total of $842!
So please check out the companies you or your spouse work for and see if they have similar programs. It was really very little work on our part for an amazing result.
Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.
