Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

off the road again

We're home. It was a l o n g 2 days in the car. I'm glad it's over! I think the kids are too. Other than watching movies (Franklin being her favorite), Claire enjoyed doing this in the car...

Here's a self portrait she took of herself and Annie.

Mabel enjoyed looking at books, playing with stickers, and yelling whenever she was tired and ready to get out...which would have been a lot less if she would have just given up and slept for more than a half hour!!
Benson could have stayed in the car for weeks with a DVD player and an iPad. He's the easy one.

We made a little side trip to Mt. Rushmore and Badlands National Park in SD on the way home. We had seen Mt. Rushmore before, so we didn't go in and walk around, but we did snoop around the Badlands. We could have spend a day or two there, exploring and hiking around the trails. It was uniquely beautiful! Not much wildlife, only some prairie dogs and 2 mountain goats, but it was a fun scenic change from the miles and miles of cornfields!

It's good to be home. The saying is true. There is no place like home! Now time to acclimate back to life in Rochester. Fun to have the Olympics to come home to! Love it.
