Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

Happy day to BENSON!!!! 6. I have a SIX year old!! How did that happen?!

It was a happy day indeed. By the end of the day all he could say was, "I just LOVE my birthday! My birthday was just the best!"

We went bowling, one of Benson's favorite things to do...

He opened presents and loved every one of them! Hats, scooter, pj's, flexiblocks, StarWars dudes, new helmet, bike pads, and a ramp to ride his bike on! Lucky boy. Happy boy.

He requested his favorite dinner, octopus hot dogs! Jared and I get a little queasy with the mere mention of the word, so we stuck with plain ol' spaghetti! We're having his friend birthday party on Saturday when we'll celebrate BIG time with his Sports birthday cake, so the next best thing was a root beer float with a candle on top! (took a video so I didn't get a snap shot!)

Claire is certainly feeling much better. She only wishes her shopping cart could be Sam's Club sized instead!

I love thinking about my kids and remembering their births. Each has a very different story, but there's certainly something special about that first little baby of yours. He's the lucky one who is patient with us as we grow with him through each new stage and attempt to figure out this thing called parenthood! How we love our Benson boy. I've called him my "sweet boy" from day ONE and he has lived true to that title. How blessed we are to have him "lead the way" in our family. He's got two lucky little sisters following right behind!
