Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

ya never know

You just never know what another day is going to bring. I suppose that's true for all of us, but unexpected "ya-never-know" type of occurrences seem to come up a bit more frequently for us.

Claire got an unexpected, unexplained fever last night. After a fun day, we were surprised when she didn't want to eat dinner and began feeling miserable-ish on the couch. We thought she might be able to make it through the night without having to go to the ED, and if she didn't have a pic line and a bile tube, she probably would have. BUT she does....and fever means a possibly infection with tubes like that coming out of a little body. After consulting with her doctor, we gave her Tylenol at 9:00 pm and then checked her temp at 11:00. It was higher at 11 than what it was before we gave her the Tylenol so we knew she needed to go in.

Jared took her to the ED and they were all ready for her. They quickly got some blood cultures drawn and started IV antibiotics. They were able to get to sleep by 3:00 am....which I was impressed by! They did x-rays, more blood work, and gave her meds throughout the day today and she began feeling much better. Her fever went away throughout the day and they were comfortable with her going home. The blood cultures are still pending, so they will keep doing daily antibiotics until they come back either positive or negative. If it's negative then this was probably just some virus she caught in the 'community' and will eventually go away on its own. If it's positive, they will continue with the antibiotics for 14 days.

So as of NOW, she's happy, she feels good, and is happy to be home. Medicine is such a blessing. I'm so glad we live in a day and in a place where medicine is so readily available!

Ya just never know what another day will bring. But for THIS minute, we're off to bed! Early.
