Five days down, a life-time to go!! Little Mabel is doing fabulous! She's a sleepy-poppy-hungry-darling little newborn and I'm loving every minute of it! She has been sleeping great so far at nights--wakes every 2 1/2 to 3 hrs to eat, but goes right back to sleep till next feeding time. I know it's early, and newborns are sleepy, but she has a very pleasant disposition overall. Benson and Claire absolutely love being the BIG brother and sister to their new sister. Was there ever any question they wouldn't??!? Claire couldn't be happier. She is super helpful and is thrilled to be called the big sister. She loves that I can hold her now. No more big tummy in the way of me and her! We enjoyed an hour on the couch today, reading books and just holding each other.
I swear Benson and Claire grew up while I was at the hospital. They both seem so much bigger and older now.
Mabel had a well baby check today and everything looks great. No concerns at all. They drew blood from the umbilical cord shortly after Mabel's birth and will run the genetic testing from that blood collection. It will take roughly 2-4 weeks to get results back, but we should be able to know from those results whether or not Mabel is affect by Primary Hyperoxaluria (PH). We really don't feel anxious or worried about getting the results. It will be good to know, but either way....we're just so happy to have sweet Mabel Sue join our family!!
Claire also did blood work on Wednesday. Kidney function looks great! No worries for her right now either. Life is good. Very good!
Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.
