Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

Day 46 aka "are you kidding me" day

Claire broke her left leg today. Both the tibia and fibula. Really? Yep. Seriously?! I know.

She was outside going down 2 small concrete steps that go to our side door. She was sitting down on the top stair, and I don't know if she got distracted or what....but she fell forward and caught herself with her hands, protecting her head (thank goodness). I really don't know how the left leg broke because she was twisted over on the right side with her hands in front and I didn't notice the position of her legs. I was mostly concerned about her head and happy to see she had caught herself before her head hit the concrete. We are at least grateful it was her left leg, as it is her right leg that has the blood clot in it.

We didn't know if it was broken after she calmed down. She seemed to be in pain, but was consoled and easily distracted to stop the crying. It wasn't swollen, bruised, or misshaped; but when she wouldn't bear any weight on it and started crying when we tried to touch it, we decided to take her to the ER to have it checked out. On the way to the hospital she and Benson were singing songs.

The X-Ray proved what we were fearing. But at least it was a clean break and surgery wouldn't be needed. They gave her a shot in her leg muscle to kind of put her out of it so she wouldn't feel them moving the bone back into place. After getting it adjusted properly, they put a pretty pink cast on and we waited for the sedition med to wear off. We were out of there within about 3 1/2 hours of checking in. Benson was especially excited that we all got to come home together tonight. So were we.

Can we just be done with October already?!?!

Watching a movie while waiting for the doctor to give us the news on the x-rays. She really wasn't in pain until you touched or even looked at her leg. Then she'd grab her calf and say "Owie."

After.

Too bad it couldn't have been a pretty bright yellow cast. If Claire and you have to carry that around,it should have been at least her favorite color!

I SURE HOPE FOR CLAIRE'S SAKE THAT THE REST OF US WILL HURRY AND LEARN WHAT WE ARE SUPPOSE TO FROM HER EXPERIENCES. ...as a little child...surely I can do better! I SO love you, Baby Doll, Benson, Natalie and Jared.

Stunned. That's all I can say- how much can her little body go through in one month? She must have an unbelieveably high tolerance for pain if she was singing songs on the way to the hospital. Wow. As always, our prayers are with you.

Holy Cow! Poor Claire!! I've never broken a leg, but having broken my arm(s) 3 separate times growing up I can vouch that she is one TOUGH cookie!! That is amazing that she was singing songs on the way to the hospital. OOOOOH! I feel soo sad for her AND you!! What a crazy thing! I hope she heals quickly & that November brings a MUCH quieter month for you all!! Love you! xoxo

Natalie, I'm speechless, not even sure what to say. I guess Heavenly Father has seen fit to make your family's place in Heaven secure within a one month period. Hang in there. We're praying.

You know, I was thinking about that left leg and realizing that it is just no fair that the right leg was having all the trouble. So I'm glad you guys worked on that and made it fair. Geez! Can't wait for the auction next week. I'm going to get myself some towels. And maybe some scrapbooking stuff. :)
