Claire has been waking up a lot more lately. They are talking serious about taking out the breathing tube tomorrow if all goes well through the night. Like I said before, that means she has to get a little practice breathing on her own now and therefore has to be a little awake to do that. She has opened her eyes a few times and tries to wiggle around as much as she can. She even wiggled enough earlier today to get one of her arm restraints off! She's a smartie! She also really wants to turn onto her tummy. But it is really quite sad to see her awake and the look in her eyes like "what in the world just happened?!" Hopefully just a few more hours of this and then we'll be able to hear her sweet voice again tomorrow!
The plan is to stop her continuous dialysis tomorrow morning and get her back on her regular 3 hour hemo dialysis. We will most likely move down to the PICU tomorrow after they stop the continuous dialysis. Still unsure how long we'll be here. However long it takes to get our little one happy, healthy, and HOME!
Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.
