Benson came to dialysis today and he always livens up the room! Unfortunately, we had to wait almost an hour after we got there before we got Claire started. They had to do a blood draw before they started dialysis and it took FOREVER for the lab people to get down there! Only slightly annoying, but what do ya do! Benson and Claire raced up and down the hall while we were waiting to get some energy our before the 3 hour-sitting session began.
But we did have a great day after we finally got going! All of Claire's blood levels look great too. Her hemoglobin is 12 which is awesome for her! That means she won't be needing another blood transfusion in the near future. They now have 2 dialysis nurses in Claire's room when they start her dialysis and when they finish it up. If things go wrong, that's usually when it happens. So it has been very comforting for Jared and I to know there are 2 nurses checking and double checking everything that goes on with Clarie. We always try to keep our eye on what the nurses are doing and definitely speak up if we see anything out of place; but it's great to know they are double checking themselves now too! Hopefully we won't have any more problems, as far as dialysis goes. Let's just get on to the transplant!
Well, on second thought, I'm actually not too anxious to get to transplant right now. I still feel like we just got out of the whole hospital loop not too long ago. But we have been home long enough and Claire has recovered well enough that I can at least now say I have my Princess back--and she is just as vibrant, loving, and cute as she was before Oct 2! It will be nice, though, when she does get her new organs and we can move past dialysis to a new phase of medical care. It will all come in it's own time.
Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.
