Clarie had a miserable night last night. She slept only about 20 minutes at a time and then startled herself awake. We tried sleeping with her on the love sac and that helped, but she was still only able to stay asleep for about 20 minutes. I think the med they gave her yesterday was causing some of that. And discomfort, I'm sure.
Her cast is so heavy and uncomfortable for her right now. She can't turn or roll over on her own. That in and of itself is very frustrating for her.
Jared took her in for dialysis today and she slept for about an hour. Benson and I brought lunch to them and we ate there for the last hour of dialysis. During the hour we were there together, Jared and I both commented that her right leg was looking swollen and seemed to be in pain. We just didn't feel things were quite right with it today and requested for an x-ray to be done on it.
And so I was wrong. She didn't break one leg. She broke both.
It is really hard to tell on the right leg where the fracutre is. It's not displaced like the left leg was. It is most likely a hair-line fracture.
Claire's bones aren't in good shape. We've know this for quite some time now-ever since she was diagnosed with kidney failure and hyperoxaluria. She has a garden variety of deposits in ALL of her bones, making them more fragile. The doctors even warned us (before she started walking) that she may even not walk until after transplant because she could experience joint pains or just not have strong enough bones to do it. Kidney failure in general causes bone issues....and on top of that, oxalate crystals also deposit in her bones causing even further damage and deterioration. It's actually quite a wonder that she hasn't had a fracture until now.
In the bone x-rays, it actually appears as though she has previously had a few fractures that have since healed. They asked us if she had fractured her legs before and we told them this was the first on we've been aware of. (I think we'd remember something like that, right?!) They were surprised....because they x-rays make it appear as though she has had multiple fractures before. Weird. Bone issues for sure. She's got to get that transplant so those bones can get better...at least a little better hopefully.
SO the right leg cast is pretty purple. This one won't necessarily have to be on for the full 4 weeks as pinkey will. And purple isn't a full leg cast either. It ends just below the knee. That's a bonus. They will check it week by week to see how things are progressing; it is expected she'll be able to have purple off within a week or two.
Okay, now it really has to start getting better. October is officially over, almost. Onward and upward we GO!
Oh. Happy Halloween. No costume for the princess today. Duck waddling pictures will have to come on a happier day. Benson had a blast!
