Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

What a beautiful sight it is to see her again!! We talked with the surgeon, Dr. Heimbach, and she said that everything went as good as it possibly could have! Those are the best words we've heard since they said they had organs for her! They removed her appendix--it was in the way, they needed more room, and she doesn't really need it anyway. They also removed both her native kidneys. She got about 3 units of red blood cells throughout the surgery, over 300 mls. Her vitals remained very stable through the night and are still looking good! The next best thing to having a transplant is having it all go so well!! Couldn't have asked for anything more. She does have a fever right now, but they said that is to be expected after all she's been through.

They are doing the ultrasound of the kidney and liver right now to see how the blood is flowing to the new organs. There is always a chance that if blood flow isn't good, they would have to take her back to the OR to revise some things....so not to be surprised if that happens. Her new kidney is producing urine like crazy which is awesome! She's pretty over-loaded with fluid but at least this time, she has a working kidney to get the fluid and waste out of there! They don't expect to do dialysis until tomorrow...and again, that is just to help that new kidney out so it doesn't get overloaded with oxalate.

It's almost scary to say that things are going so well thus far....but they are!! We're not planning on it being an easy-ride from here on out, but if it is, we'll take it. Many doctors have said that there is always something that throws us all for a loop after a big surgery like this....so be ready for it. So far, so good! Thanks for all the prayers and good wishes.

(pictures coming soon. I left my connector to the computer at home, but it's on it's way!)
