Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

Dec 17

Jared is with Claire as she finishes up the last few minutes of her 2-hour dialysis. We had a great afternoon together....just enjoying one another and making last-minute preprations. She started dialysis at 7:00 and they now project transplant to begin right around midnight. The surgeons are very pleased with the organs.

The organs are coming from Wisconsin. It's so hard to think of a family who is grieving right now for the loss of their little one. But how grateful we are that this amazing miracle can take place. They are from a 5-year old child, 20 kg. The liver is too big for Claire so they will cut it down to fit in her body. If they can, they will split the liver in half and use half for Claire and half for another patient. If they need more than half for Claire, they will use all they need for her and the other patient will have to wait for different organs. The decision will be made in the OR and in Claire's best interest becasue she is higher up on the list. They are happy with the size of the kidney. We're on up way up to the PICU now to see what comes next.

Here we go!!

You don't know us, but we were in your shoes 4 years ago when our daughter had her liver transplant. We will keep you in our prayers. We felt so torn, so relived our daughter was getting a second chance at life but, so sad a family had lost their child. Best of luck as you begin this new phase in life.:)
