Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

Claire was definitely having some withdraws from the fentanyl this afternoon. They decreased that dose by more than half and when we saw how she reacted to it, they bumped it back up a bit so the withdraws wouldn't be so abrupt. We'll slowly be weaning her off of that and put her on a different medicine to control pain. It's amazing what drugs (even good ones for medicinal purposes) can do to your body. I hate to see others, let alone my innocent daughter, under the control of any substance that takes away who that person really is. It's hard for us to see her so fidgety, unable to rest or settle down, and kind of zombie-ish as she stares off into space. We'll take the fentanyl weaning process slowly over the next few days and hopefully get her emotions/spirits back to her normal self soon.

Fluid is still coming off nicely. And all the labs still look good! We started some pedialyte through her G-tube to start to wake up her tummy again and so far, she has tolerated it well. She pooped today which everyone was excited about. Funny how the things we get excited about change when you're in a hospital setting! For us so far, poop and pee have been among the highlights!! It's good to see those bowels working again. Slowly things are progressing in the right direction.

I got a good nap this afternoon and now Jared's on duty for the night. I wished him luck! Things should be better tonight than last night. Hopefully they'll be able to get some good rest. I know I will!

Opening up our Secret Santa gift at the hospital. Benson won't let any of us forget!!

This worried look on Claire's face is pretty much what we saw all day. And the words we kept hearing today over and over again were "bye bye."
