Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

Dec 22 11:30 am

What a night. Claire and I both had a miserable night. Not because of Claire or her inability to sleep. Mostly because of the nurses' inability to do her job 100% correct. I'm not here to complain....just to tell how I see things from the parent-of-a-patients perspective. Jared and I are extremely picky when it comes to how nurses perform their work on Claire. We've had too many little mistakes that cause big problems. Our tolerance for mistakes is pretty close to zero. We had to start her 24-hour urine over again because of a simple mistake last night, her central line could have gotten clotted off if I hadn't notice that the heparin wasn't on, and the lab they drew this morning didn't work because the nurse didn't draw back the waste before she sent the sample. They had to redraw those labs. The pumps were beeping at least once (mostly twice) an hour and I had to call for the nurse each time to fix things. Slightly frustrating. We talked with the nurse and doctor in charge to let them know of our concerns so things should get better. They better! We know that nobody is perfect but we are just trying to avoid any mistake that could cause unnecessary problems or discomfort to Claire.

She's doing pretty well this morning in spite of the lack of sleep we both got. She's a bit fidgety today. Possibly some withdraws from the pain medication and it could also be a reaction to the anti-rejection meds she's on. She's getting a blood transfusion now because her blood level was low. She's finally settled in for a nap so I'm going to try to do the same. Labs are still looking good. Urine output has been pretty steady with the diuretic/lasix combo. They're happy with the amount she's putting out and she's looking sooooo much better!

It is pretty strenuous when the professional Mom and Dad also has to become the "medical professionals!" Stay strong...she needs you as her advocates!
We are all so joyous over the advancement that has been made. This practically perfect miracle will remain that way with your keen insight and inspiration.
We love you tons! Grandma Great and Grandma Shirlene

Nat...so sorry to hear about all of the nurse issues! It is so great that you pay attention to every detail because no one is perfect! I have learned through experience, that YOU, are the BEST nurse for your loved ones! Always trust your mother's intuition and the Holy Ghost...so glad that you and Claire can get some rest! You are one terrific Mom!!!

Oh man. Reading stuff like that gets me so fired up. My adrenaline is pumping. That nurse needs to get her head in the game. (at least that is what Lib would say.) She is dealing with some seriously precious cargo there. So glad you are so good at taking care of your little girl. Keep you eye out. I hope things get better. They don't want to start getting phone calls from Utah. :) So glad that Claire's body is doing so well considering!

I hope the rest of the day is filled with love and the Spirit of Christmas. Claire is such a sweet little angel. Give her hugs from me....

I haven't commented, but have been following for the last few months.
I have 2 children with severe medical conditions, so hospital stays are all too common here and I can really relate to the nurse issue very closely. It is unfortunate it happens. The nurses assume mom and dad can do some of the care they are suppose to do, so they tend to be lazy. Thankfully it has been 18mos since our last hospital stay..knock on wood.

We are also LDS and have been praying for your children and family.
