Jared and I should have known better. When they told us we might be able to go home on Tuesday or Wednesday...that's hospital time. So really, it's more like...by the end of the week, if you're lucky!
Before she can be released, they need to get her fluid situation figured out. They need to know exactly how much urine she is putting out every hour so they can know how much fluid we need to get down her each day. Protecting the kidney post transplant is just as critical as the transplant itself. The oxalate that will continue to slowly come out of her body needs will be filtered out through the kidney. So there needs to be lots of water with it to keep that kidney cleaned and protected from oxalate damage. So the only way to know if we're giving her enough fluid is to measure how much is coming out!
And so she has a urine catheter back in today. They want to measure what she puts out for the next 24-36 hours to see how much fluid we need to give her when we go home. AND to make sure that Claire's tummy can tolerate all the fluid she needs. So that will be the goal for the next few days.
Benson came to the hospital today and we watched Ice Age 3. The kids were supposed to fall asleep during the movie. They didn't. I did!
Claire ate a cheeto today and put 4 bites of pizza in her mouth. She ended up spitting all the pizza out (mostly because she doesn't know how to chew yet) but did saturate the cheeto enough with her saliva to get that one down! She also had a few sips of apple juice without giving us the ebber-ka-jeebers after swallowing it!! This eating thing has really been triggered since the transplant! She is extremely interested in food now and I'm sure in no time, will be chowing down on her own. So exciting!

Sorry you have to stay at the hospital for a few more days. I hope you're really able to get home by the weekend!! That IS exciting that Claire is starting to want to eat! It sounds like another manifestation that the transplants WORKED!!!
I love the photos of Claire sitting with her legs crossed. How DARLING is that?!? I've noticed her sitting that way in a few different posts! SO CUTE!!
Those photos of her kidneys are so interesting. I can't believe how TINY they are! Just curious-- will they let you know what they find out with the research?!?
We got your blog from Trevor and Stacey (my husband is Stacey's cousin). So I hope you don't mind us looking at your blog. I have been following Claire's transplant and I am so happy she is doing so well. We have a little one that may need a small bowel transplant in the future (and possible more organs as well). I pray for little Claire and your family every day. Hang in there I know it is tough, you guys amaze me! By the way the pictures of the kidney's was very interesting thanks for sharing. Hope Claire Continues to do well!
I get such a kick out of her crossed legs in these pics! What a character! And her faces. Oh so precious.
Thanks again for the updates. They are much much appreciated. We think of you always!
Go Cheetos! Go Claire! You're a tough girl. Keep getting better.
