Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

Day 81

Claire had a busy day today. Dialysis was longer today because the person who set up the machine put the wrong size of tubing on it. It was smaller than her normal size, so it didn't process as much blood per hour. We had to stay an extra half-hour to get the same volume of blood processed. Urgh. And lab took about 30 minutes to get there before we could even start...so it was just long! Such is life.

After dialysis, I ran home, grabbed a sandwich made my hubby, and turned on a new library movie for Benson to watch while Jared worked in the basement. Claire and I had to go back to the hospital for her to have x-rays done of her entire body. Her bones have so many different issues going on with them that they wanted to see how each bone looked pre-transplant so they could have a base line to compare with the improvements that will come post-transplant.

X-ray appointments are never fun. She doesn't like them. It doesn't hurt at all but the positions they put her in and the pressure they put on her body to make sure she is still is what is so uncomfortable and frightening for her. Surprisingly, she did the best she's ever done for x-rays...which was a blessing for all of us because they had to take a lot of pictures and put her in a lot of weird positions. She cried through it all but laid quite still for the majority of the positions. Submission. That's the one word that kept coming through my head as I held her hand through the x-rays. She submits to what needs to be done regardless of how 'sad' she may feel about it. What a sweet girl.

And she was sweet today. Lots of hugs and cuddles from the princess. And Benson couldn't stop saying "I love you Clarie."

I've visited your blog before but don't think I've ever commented. Somewhere along the way I learned of your story and put your button up on my blog. Your children are absolutely beautiful and I can't imagine how hard it must be for you to watch the doctors poke and prod them. Your photos at right are so sweet...especially the one of Benson holding Claire!...thank you for sharing them with us;)
