Benson and Claire were born with a rare genetic disease in which their liver produces too much oxalate--called primary hyperoxaluria. Claire's condition has progressed much faster than Benson's. She was on dialysis since she was 3 months old and for much of that time, did dialysis 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. She receive a much needed kidney / liver transplant on December 18, 2009. It is expected Benson will eventually need similar transplants.

Dec 18 9:00 pm

It should be a good night. Two things that they will be watching tonight: her urine output and her fever. She has had a fever all day. It comes down when she gets Tylenol but then spikes back up to about 38.9 ish as it wears off. They took blood and urine cultures to check for possible infection. Hopefully it is just her body's way of reacting to the surgery and changes going on in her body.

The urine output has been declining every hour so they first gave her a 100 ml boulis of saline and are now doing 200 mls more. They will continue to increase her fluid intake so there is more urine to put out. Hopefully that kidney will keep on keepin' on and get that fluid out of there!

Depending on what her oxalate level is tomorrow, Claire will have dialysis in the morning. The doctors fully expect she will need it but the oxalate level will confirm.

Hopefully it will be a quiet night for Claire and a slightly more restful night for the rest of us. We could certainly use it! There's hopeful talk that they might even take the breathing tube out tomorrow if things continue to go well. How GREAT that would be!!

What a great transplant day!!

Thanks again for the happy, healing, healthy vibes we feel from all around the country!
